metal gear

As some of you may know, the next chapter in the Metal Gear saga will be called Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and will be a PSP exclusive. Hideo Kojima, father of Snakes (lulz), assured fans that, despite being developed for a handheld, the game will not be a spin off, but a full Metal Gear title.

Peace Walker is a sequel to Metal Gear Solid 3 and takes place in Costa Rica,  during the “blank period” of 20 years that started in the  mid 70s . And yes, we’ll be controlling Snake (that’s Naked Snake, Solid Snake’s father).

Story-wise, Konami hasn’t revealed anything yet but we should learn more from the TGS trailer that’s a few hours away from being released. The cut scenes will be a mix between  illustrations and computer visuals. The illustrations are being done by Yoji Shinkawa and Ashley Wood and they’re said to be dynamic.

There are also some new details about the co-op: Co-op In is a state that two players enter when their characters are next to each other; the life gauges will be shared and items can be swapped between the two. Snake In is a state that is reached when the characters get even closer. Players will have the ability to change into Snake Formation, which ties the characters together. One character controls movement for the entire group, allowing the other players to concentrate on other things, like shooting for instance.

Japanese gaming mag Famitsu has revealed the cast for the game and most of the characters are brand new, with a few surprises here and there:

  • Snake
  • Amanda
  • Huey (could be linked to the Emmerich family)
  • Chico
  • Strangelove (nod to Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, as both of them are related to nuclear bombs)
  • Coldman
  • Cecile
  • Miller (Solid Snake’s mentor)
  • Paz (name means ‘Peace’, the theme for Peace Walker)
  • Galvez

Kojima himself is helming this, handling design, direction and scenario writing. He’s also working on Metal Gear Rising and the new Castlevania so … he kinda has his hands full for the moment.

UPDATE: And the trailer is now live:
